As stated in a 2007 Nashville City Paper feature article on the
program, Act Like a GRRRL encourages
“an attitude based on intelligence, confidence and individualism.”
The format of the program ensures that each day, GRRRLS meet female
guest artists who introduce them to innovative ways to incorporate
writing, visual art, music, movement and dance into their lives.
In addition, each day includes movement exercises and lots of writing!
Because the program promotes the incorporation of a system of positive
values into participant’s everyday life, the girls report
that their participation in ALAG has impacted who they are at school.
Specifically, girls report a decreased tolerance for bullying, a
greater appreciation for diversity, and a desire to create connection
across differences. These girls become leaders rather than followers
and have an increased ability to listen to their own inner guidance.
