Founded in 2005, Act Like a GRRRL is an annual four-week autobiographical
writing program for girls aged 12-18 offering space and support for young women to gain a public voice, work with professional female mentors in a variety of creative fields, and foster friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds. Rooted in the exercise of writing to articulate personal experiences and beliefs, the program is augmented by guest artist workshops in performance, dance, and multicultural studies. The program culminates in a public performance
created and enacted entirely by the GRRRLs!
ALAG is about building community where girls from various socio-economic backgrounds, schools, neighborhoods, cultures, and faiths come together as a collective. The girls write about their unique experiences, examine and embrace both their differences and similarities, and hold one another to the values and inherent expectations associated with independence and empowerment.

As stated in a 2007 Nashville City Paper feature article on the program, Act Like a GRRRL encourages “an attitude based on intelligence, confidence and individualism.” The format of the program ensures that each day, GRRRLS meet female guest artists who introduce them to innovative ways to incorporate writing, visual art, music, movement and dance into their lives. In addition, each day includes movement exercises and lots of writing!

Because the program promotes the incorporation of a system of positive values into participant’s everyday life, the girls report that their participation in ALAG has impacted who they are at school. Specifically, girls report a decreased tolerance for bullying, a greater appreciation for diversity, and a desire to create connection across differences. These girls become leaders rather than followers and have an increased ability to listen to their own inner guidance.
